5.4.1 - Professional standards and accountability

Welcome to chapter 4 of the 'Best practice in teaching' module. In this chapter, we'll be discussing professional standards and the concept of accountability. Both of these concepts are critical in good educational practice: the former refers to the standards which all teachers should uphold as a minimum, while the latter refers to the responsibilities which are conferred on teachers to do this.

Goals for this section

  • To understand the concepts of professional standards and accountability, and to have a firm grasp of the reasons why these factors are pivotal to current educational practice.

Objectives for this section

  • To be able to provide clear definitions of 'professional standards' and 'accountability'.
  • To be able to analyse and critique both concepts, identifying any limitations there may be or any barriers which may arise as well as the strengths of the concepts.
  • To be able to identify situations which arise in practice in which professional standards/accountability are particularly pertinent, and to be able to apply theoretical knowledge of these concepts in practice.
